History

Woodmoor Public Safety (WPS) as we know it today began on January 1, 1995. Beginning in the early 1980's and up until 1995, WPS was known as the Woodmoor Police Department (WPD).

In the early years, the WPD was funded through the Woodmoor Improvement Association (WIA) by a police user fee. This funding was then changed to a voluntary contribution for the WPD. The WPD Officers were commissioned through the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office as "special commissioned deputies". WPD had all the powers that any law enforcement officer had.

On January 1, 1995 a state law changed in Colorado that standardized law enforcement training and standards. The new law required that all peace officers in Colorado have training through an accredited police academy, have at least 40 hours per year of job related training, and be employed by a government entity. Even though all the WPD officers had the police academy training and the job related training, a Homeowners Association employed us... not a government entity. For this reason, we lost our commissions with the county. This precipitated our change from a Police Force to Woodmoor Public Safety.

Although WPS officers are no longer considered law enforcement officers, WPS does offer the Woodmoor community a professional, well-trained, and courteous staff. At WPS, the number one priority is the protection of the Woodmoor community. We look out for residents and their property and are dedicated to helping maintain the Woodmoor area as having one of the lowest crime rates areas in El Paso County. WPS does this by diligently patrolling the area with seven full time officers and responding with other emergency agencies in the area.

All seven WPS employees work a ten-hour shift. They will work a four-day on, four-day off schedule. That gives the Woodmoor community 24 hour coverage, 7 days a week, all year round, even on holidays.

All of us at WPS are proud to serve this wonderful community. It takes much more than just security to make this community what it is. It takes all of us working together to keep our families, property, and the community safe.
